group photoSince its launch in 2011, about 126 master’s-degree-level students or health professionals have participated in Éxito! Latino Cancer Research Leadership Training, a doctoral degree and cancer research training program led by the Institute for Health Promotion Research at UT Health San Antonio.

Below are the inspiring stories of their lives, what led them to Éxito!, and their futures as potential doctoral students and cancer control researchers.

 


2019

“The [Éxito!] summer institute provided me with future colleagues and friends that I know I can rely on and push since we all want to see each other succeed. I feel confident that I can get into a PhD program,” Acuna said.

Éxito! has empowered me to be the strong Latina that I am in all places,” Aguilar said.

“I think [the Éxito! summer institute] has made me more confident about competing with other doctoral candidates,” Garcia Alcaraz said.

“[At Éxito!], it was empowering knowing such amazing people that are at the same place as me,” Ramos Cartagena said.

Éxito! has instilled in me the self-confidence I needed to continue pursuing my goals and has motivated me to be confident in myself and in my abilities. It picked me up when I felt like I was falling down,” Rubio Correa said.

“I feel more knowledgeable about how to go about the process of pursing a doctoral degree. Enlightened, [Éxito!] taught about new topics and concepts that I either did not know about or knew very little about,” Costa said.

Éxito! has changed my entire perspective on what a successful individual looks like,” Dionicio said.

“[Éxito!] made me realize how valuable and important we are in the research world,” Flores said.

“This program has been life-changing for me,” said Centeno Girona.

Éxito! helped Gonzalez “see the value in our personal narratives,” she said.

“[Éxito!] switched my gears in how I’ll be using my resources towards my next degree,” Guardado said.

“I think the [Éxito! Summer] Institute provided me the opportunity to learn about authentic mentorship,” Jauregui said.

Lozano said the Éxito! Summer institute provided a “very important role” in guiding the next steps in her career.

“[Éxito!] reaffirmed “that I am capable of pursuing a doctorate and there is a Latinx community in which is or will be on the same journey and has similar experiences in academia and life,” Marin said.

“The Éxito! summer institute has motivated me to apply for Spring 2020 admissions,” Cantu-Pawlik said.

“The [Éxito!] Summer Institute gave me the confidence, tools, and motivation I need to start narrowing down my research topic, potential mentors and schools, and take on the doctoral application process,” Reyes said.

“The [Éxito!] summer institute played a key role in preparing me for PhD applications,” Reyes said.

“The [Éxito!] program was empowering and allowed us to share our journey. Some of us had external or internal barriers and others had both. To see we all ended up in the same space wanting the same common goal was liberating,” Rodriguez said.

Silva said Éxito! guided the next steps in her career by “building my confidence and knowledge in applying to a doctoral program.”

“The [Éxito!] Summer Institute provided me with the tools, encouragement, and empowerment to take the next steps and make the necessary moves to put me in a good position to apply and succeed in a doctoral program.”

“The program offered [by Éxito!] during the five days exposed to the need in cancer research among Latinos.” Torres said.

“I am filled with love and gratitude for the [Éxito!] experience and to be surrounded by people with shared interests,” Valdivieso said.

“[Éxito!] has made me feel more confident in applying to a doctoral program when that time comes in a few years,” Villarruel said.

“I feel more prepared and confident to fill up the application forms for the admission to the doctoral programs, to the scholarships, and how to write a good personal statement,” Santiago Yance said.

“This Éxito! Summer Institute gave me the confidence to begin planning for a career in research,” Zamora said.

2018

“I think the program works because the staff makes everything very personal and individual. You don’t feel invisible. You feel important and appreciated for who you are.”

“I really appreciate all the information that was provided during the [Éxito! summer] institute, it allowed me to see that I can apply for a doctoral program. I also felt I gained more family and a greater support network in the staff and participants,” Bonilla said.

“If your interest is to complete a doctoral degree or you have doubts about doing it or not, Éxito! will clarify all your concerns and give you the motivation and confidence to do it.”

“This program will provide you guidance and the tools needed to continue your education and the next steps in your career. ¡Si se puede!”

Cervantes said the Éxito! summer institute provided “another means of support and guidance” in her efforts to promote Latino health.

“The [Éxito!] summer institute allowed me to connect with others that had similar backgrounds and obstacles (cultural, gender, financial, etc.) and a similar interest of how health and culture can either mitigate or increase disparities; wanting to further our education despite not knowing many (or any) others that have obtained a doctoral degree,” said Cordero.

Cruz recently graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, with a master’s degree in toxicology.

Matos-Cunningham, credits The Éxito! summer institute for her “increased confidence.”

“This program was incredible in giving us all the tools we needed to successfully apply to doctoral programs,” said Dias.

“Do it! Don't be afraid! I was a little uneasy about what to expect, especially since I'm prone to anxiety as it is. But attending was a great decision, and it was helpful to push me to reevaluate what I want to do, what I want to research, and how I'm going to get there.”

“The [Éxito! summer institute] motivated me and showed me that it is possible to overcome many barriers in pursuing a doctoral degree,” Garcia said.

“I really enjoyed hearing from Latinx speakers in the field,” Ballesteros-Gonzalez said. “It motivated and made me feel like I too can make it.”

Juarez said the Éxito! summer institute was “a great experience.”

“Participating in [the Éxito! summer institute] was extremely helpful in planning the next steps of my career,” Landa said.

“I think the [Éxito!] summer institute allowed me to connect with peers and professionals in the field who can become part of my support system as I apply to a PhD program and continue on with my career,” said Marquez.

“I think the most important thing that helped me decide to apply to a doctoral program was knowing that everyone’s path is different, but con esfuerzo todo es posible.”

“I am grateful for the incredible opportunity to learn from great speakers and peers at the [Éxito!] summer institute,” said Garcia-Medina.

“[The Éxito!  summer institute] encouraged me to pursue my doctoral studies,” Muñoz said.

“[The Éxito!  summer institute] brought me back to the idea of getting the PhD and it provided tools to actually help me get started,” Ochoa said.

2017

“[Éxito!] had a primary role in guiding me toward my next career goals,” she said. “I was unsure of myself and I gained the confidence and tools to successfully apply and get accepted into a doctoral program.”

“The [Éxito!] summer institute has given me the motivation to pursue a career in the field I love, public health,” Baez said. “There are many things that I had no idea about, but now know, because of the [Éxito!] summer institute.”

Éxito!  helped me realize that I am not alone, when it comes to a family that doesn't understand what it is I do,” she said. “It helped me see that many of my obstacles are the same as the other participants.”

“The [Éxito!] summer institute has motivated me to seek a doctoral program that fits my career interest,” she said. “The institute made me realize that my career as a researcher is a journey and that I should enjoy it.
